Math is a BIG Idea

Three components of Mathematics

Mathematics influences many physical activities, even activities as simple as figuring how much money you have and how much you can spend. Many other examples will be demonstrated in class.

Mathematics is a language itself complete with specialized notation. Would you rather write, "two added to three is five" or "2 + 3 = 5" ? I will teach you to use proper math notation and apply it correctly to appropriate problems

Mathematics can also be a purely academic discipline. Proving that the square root of two is a fundamentally different kind of number (irrational) than a fraction (rational) is an exciting and challenging task that helps form the foundation of mathematics. However, the emphasis in MA005 and MA101 will be on using math rather than proving why math works.
